That's forty eight half hours that have influenced virtually every piece of fiction since they first aired. The show that pioneered the twist ending. The show that pioneered Sci-Fi in our every day lives. The show that made just about every sci-fi show that came after it possible. Buffy? Steals from the Twilight Zone. X-Files? Steals from the Twilight Zone. Star Trek? Steals from the Twilight Zone. Tales from the Crypt? Masters of Horror? You guessed it. This is THE definitive show for Sci-Fi/Horror/Fantasy fans. It's a blueprint for how to tell these stories properly, concisely, and engagingly. The best part? They aged REALLY well. So, go, watch it. If you haven't watched it before, you're in for a treat. I think it might justbe the best Sci-Fi movie of the past ten years. Just like the Firefly was the best Sci-Fi TV Show in years, the movie manages to really move leaps and bounds beyond it's contemporaries. It's just an exemplary piece of fiction, based wholly in the realm of characterization, which, frankly, we haven't seen since the original Star Wars. Prior to this, there was The Matrix. The first one. The good one. But, you compare the two, and you see that The Matrix is a movie about ideas. Big ideas. The characters are merely paper dolls the Wachowski's move into position to execute on those ideas. And they do it brilliantly. Serenity does that too. It's about big ideas. Courage, heroism, love, freedom. But, it's not about the concepts as abstracts. It's not about destiny, and every step of the way you feel the peril these characters are in. You really don't know who's going to make it, and you actually give a fuck because of it. Joss Whedon shops at my comic shop. Or, at least he did. I haven't seen him in a while. The shop is populated by luminaries. I manage to see Bruce Timm hanging out there just about every week, as well as a slew of other big name comic pros, animation guys, and film and tv writers and directors. (Apparently, the entire writing staff of Alias comes in together every Wednesday, for example.) And I generally greet, talk to, wave, or nod to all of them. But not Joss. I'm outright terrified of him. The work he's done, specifically as a genre creator initimidates the fuck out of me. He is the real deal. This guy pulled himself up and redefined television. Really. Think about how many shows with such in depth continuing stories there were Pre-Buffy. Think about how many shows there were that so effectively hit such a wide demographic, yet never felt targeted or market researched to death. St. Elsewhere. Homicide. Hill Street Blues. Twin Peaks. That's really about it. Even the stuff David E. Kelly was doing back then lacked the true feeling of continuity (and not in the fanboy "Please see episode 2x04 for more information" kind of way.) Joss turned 'genre' into a successful model. I truly believe that his work paved the way for the renaisaance of Superhero movies, action movies, and animation. (I mean, c'mon, he did work on Toy Story that gave it it's wittiest banter.) What's saddest about watching Serenity now is knowing that this is probably the last we'll see of the characters. When I saw it in the theater, there was a palatable feeling of hope... that this was the time when something good would win out over something safe and mediocre. But, now, we know that Star Wars Episode III: Ruining a Generation's Childhood would go on to be one of the biggest hits of the year, and Serenity wouldn't even make back it's budget. But, Joss came out of it a film director and screenwriter. He's got his horror movie in the pike, and then Wonder Woman. Which means finally there might be an even bigger audience for a man who might just be the most talented son of a bitch in Hollywood. I have to admit to being a browncoat and one of the crazy people shouting in the wilderness when FIREFLY was first airing. The show is one of the best things to touch television.

It's not fandom but the technical beauty of it that makes me watch it over and over again. I'm scribbling notes to myself as I watch it: bits on pacing and framing shots. The director's commentary alone is a goldmine.

It's real easy to watch it and say to one's self "You will never be this good," and wander off to a bar to indulge your depression. As I've continued to watch it, I'm realizing that it's not something that's discouraging me. It's just making me intolerant of mediocrity.12/28/2005 09:53:00 AM|W|P|Blogger Fialkov|W|P|and that, in theory, is a good thing. ;)12/27/2005 04:43:00 PM|W|P|Fialkov|W|P|BUZZSCOPE :: Weekly Review Roundup: December 21, 2005: "ELK’S RUN #4 – BUZZSCORE: A By Joshua Hale Fialkov, Noel Tuazon and Scott Keating * Speakeasy, $2.99 If there were any reservations about declaring an 8-issue mini-series one of the best of the year based only on its first three chapters, Elk’s Run hits the halfway point with a bang, cementing its status in my mind as THE sleeper hit of the year. After last issue’s shocking turn of events saw two state troopers killed for prying too deeply into town affairs, Fialkov switches perspectives again, showing the immediate aftermath through the eyes of the four teenagers charged with disposing the bodies as they come to grips with what’s happened and debate their escape. “Who knows what else they’ve done…?” Flashing back periodically to a hunting expedition, Fialkov continues to unfold his story of a tightly knit community coming apart at the seams, deftly fleshing out motivations and balancing even the most extreme actions within a very human context. Tuazon and Keating complement the story’s mounting tension with atmospheric visuals that will look great when some smart director brings Elk’s Run to theaters, Sin City-style, in a couple of years. When something like the Speakeasy situation happens, I usually just sit back and look at what smarter people have to say on the subject. Because really, what I know about the economics of comics publishing and anything resembling high finance could comfortably fit in half of a hollowed-out Skittle, with plenty of room left over. (And to anyone who got a good chuckle out of the use of “comics” and “high finance” in the same sentence, you’re welcome.) But reading the updates and analysis and noting that the fourth issue of Elk’s Run is due out today, I find myself a little more wistful than I would normally be at yet another industry implosion.

As you could tell, did some re-coloring on here, thought it was time for something a little... grayer. I don't know. Anyways, I've sort of organized my ideas for what I want each online spot to be. First, this blog, will continue pretty much as it is. All purpose news for whatever I'm doing, whatever's coming out, and random pictures of me looking miserable. One of the things I've wanted to do was sort of an 'idea blog' just a place to put ideas down and keep them for later, plus maybe open discussions about it with other people. I finally settled on making it a Live Journal page, cause I like how the comments there work. Seems functional. So, you can see that page (complete with the first nugget) here. Then, there's the MySpace blog, which'll be just my rantings and ravings about the media and the news and all the unpopular opinions that all of my friends hate me for. Finally, make sure you keep checking the Hoarse and Buggy site and the Speakeasy Forums for updates and such, which'll become much more regular in the new year. As to 'regularity,' I'd bank on this blog being updated the most (close to every day), the LiveJournal at least once a week, and the MySpace every once in a while. I'll probably cross-post to keep you guys abreast of what's updated.|W|P|113497356790287597|W|P|Right, so... Here's the Dilly-o.|W|P|joshfialkov@gmail.com12/18/2005 09:37:00 PM|W|P|Fialkov|W|P|

Honestly? The numbers didn't move much at all. Had we continued self-publishing, our numbers would probably be at about the same plateau. The constant delays and miscommunications between Speakeasy and the printers have in fact probably hurt us in the long run, because when we self-published, we had every issue out not just on time, but usually early, and now issue 4 is two months late, issue 5 will be two months late, and hopefully, we'll be caught up by issue 6. As to how it's going to affect us... Well, despite any animosity that comes out of my big stupid mouth, Adam's been doing his best to be a stand up guy. He assured me that Elk's Run will see print and that together we're finding a way to make it happen. I announced over on my blog a few of those steps. First, we're raising the price on issue 7 and 8 up to $3.99. This sucks. This kills me, because I've spent years criticising the pricing of comics, but, at the end of the day, I have a responsibility to my co-creators and to my business partner to lose as little money as possible, and that extra dollar means that we can actually afford to pay our letterist and colorist without having to take it out of my already quite depleted grocery money. As to Diamond, we're well above their cutoff, and they've been huge supporters of the book from day one, so, for the time being, that's not a concern. Where all this stuff really affects us is in marketing and promotion. We can't afford Previews ads anymore; were drastically cutting back on our convention appearances this year; and, we're switching all of our comp list over to digital copies of the books. Right now, all we care about is getting the book out, and come hell or high water we're going to do it.
|W|P|113466391726334556|W|P|Buzzscope on Speakeasy|W|P|joshfialkov@gmail.com12/13/2005 08:38:00 PM|W|P|Fialkov|W|P|Speakeasy had Rich Johnston let the cat out of the bag about their new 'policy shift' regarding their lagging creator owned comic series. A day passed uneventfully. Then all hell seems to have broken loose. Here's a few of the conversations going crazy about it: Focused Totality The Beat The Engine The Bendis Board The Speakeasy Forums So, in any event, here's the skinny for Elk's Run, and I'm doing an interview with Buzzscope later this week to give some more in depth insight into what it means for us. Essentially, it means nothing for us. As of right now, despite our shit-tacular sales, Speakeasy is just as committed as they were day one, and the book will continue to come out for the forseeable future. There will however be a couple of minor changes. We are literally fighting tooth and nail to fight and make sure the book sees print as issues. 1) (I'll start with the smallest and stupidest) The Inside Covers of the book are now Black and White... it saves some money, in theory. 2) Issue 5 is due out next month, Issue 6 in February/March, Issue 7 in March/April, and Issue 8 in June/July. 3) We're IDW-ing up the place. Issues 7&8 will cost $3.99. It's pretty much what we have to do in order to survive. Issue 7 will have a 5 page backup from Event Horizon, and issue 8 will most likely be oversized, so, hopefully the price increase will feel worth it. 4) Same Great Story, Same Great Art. Alright, so that's all the important stuff. This week a project I'd long figured as dead suddenly came back to life, and became something entirely different than I expected. It's much more Poorly Drawn Animals than it is Elk's Run, at this point. And it's pretty refreshing to get to do something much closer to 'free expression' than what I've been doing the past few months. As it sits, it's got a feel of The Young Onesor Red Dwarf and it's conceived as sort of a surrealist sitcom in pamphlet form. All self-contained, and hopefully satsifying enough to make you come back for more without the hook of a true on going story. Alright, back off to throwing up phlegm.|W|P|113436414768277098|W|P|Bronchitis and Projects|W|P|joshfialkov@gmail.com12/07/2005 10:25:00 PM|W|P|Fialkov|W|P|Over at Popthought you can win yourself a free copy of the Elk's Run Bumper Edition. Today was "Take care of lingering shit" day. Got the H&B site nice and updated, just about squared away Elk's Run #5 to go to the printer, got a long awaited check, so that I could actually pay some bills, and got most of my invoicing for the week done. I even managed to finally get my writers portfolio squared away (for a last minute possible job.) I've got about four projects percolating, artists already in place on two, and then the other two are still being formulated. I spent a helluva long time prepping Ritual Homicide, and thanks to the whole "story of the book coming true" it was nixed. I'm dying to work with the artist, (the sensational Chris Burnham). My good buddy Gary and I have dueling Post-Apocalypse projects we're developing seperately, so I get to have fun "Well, when I get to blow up the world," conversations at least once a week. Also, got my first look at the finished Dillinger, by James Patrick, which is in Previews next month, and which I edited. It turned out really nicely and I recommend you all give it an order. I'll post its order number when I get a chance. Been giving a lot of thought to the realities of publishing lately. The fact is the comic industry is in shambles, despite some record sales for the big boys, things haven't looked much grimmer for us on the bottom in a long time. I'm in this strange place where the critical acclaim keeps on coming (although Randy Lander manages to actually match my sentiments on the first 3 issues of the book pretty well right here), but the book remains pretty much unchanged in terms of sales. The Bumper Edition seems to have been purchased almost exclusively by our fans who were already on board, and god damn to I love you guys for buying it. Here's the thing, I can't think of any other medium that relies so heavily on its fans getting the word out. Comics... I mean, seriously, how many times have you been in a shop and some guy says, "You should check this out, its awesome," and bam. You're done. You try it, you love it. It all comes down to this Lion King-esque circle of life. If you love it, and want it to stick around, all you can do is shout from the treetops that you love it, and hope for the best. Anyways, back to work.|W|P|113382776745900518|W|P|Housecleaning|W|P|joshfialkov@gmail.com12/08/2005 08:17:00 AM|W|P|Blogger Unknown|W|P|Hey Josh,

I have to agree with you on the state of the industry where the non-big boys are concerned. (Sadly)

It kills me that a book as outright excellent and original as Elk's Run can languish at (didn't you say somewhere) around 1,000 copies, even with all the great press it's been getting. My local comic shop doesn't even buy a single copy for the shelf; he just fills the reserves, which is probably me and one other guy from the sound of it.

Here I am, in the bustling metropolis of Little Rock, about to start year two of my five-year plan to write comics, and it sure seems like an uphill struggle, to say the least.

BTW I hope you get the post-apocalypse book off the ground -- what is more fun to read about than the end of the world?!

I hope ER 4 is out in a couple of weeks like you were thinking over on the Speakeasy board.
